In the first chapter it gives us a rundown of what the book will consist of and the techniques used to take photos. The chapter states that the basic tools of lighting are principles, not hardware. You can have the camera, but you have to know how to use it to get a good picture. Over time you will incorporate techniques and skills learned to get that picture you envision. When taking pictures, you have to be able to adjust with what you have whether it be the scene, location, or lighting. Lighting is not always available so adjust when and where you need it. This will help you build your pictures with what you envision.

In the next chapter, to sum up, is the manipulation of light. Light is a type of energy called electromagnetic radiation. The three things to be primarily concerned with as a photographer is brightness, color, and contrast of the light. To a photographer it is very important to have quality light source that is bright because it is always better to have a bright like rather than a dim light. Having colored lights are usually considered to have an artistic contribution to the images taken. When using white lights, they have a range of colors as well. To have light source with high contrast it would consists of rays that all strike the subject from nearly the same angle. Light source with low contrast has rays that strike the subject form a lot of different angles. Light is capable of passing through materials, absorbing by the subject, and reflecting off an objecting.

In the last chapter, we are going to take a look at reflection and the different ways it can be seen. Light is able to reflect form a subject as diffuse reflection, direct reflection, or glare. With diffuse reflection it means the same brightness regardless of the angle we are looking at it from. Direct reflection, also called specular reflections, is a mirror image of the light source that produces them. This means that when you look at the mirror you will see a blinding reflection form the light source. As a photographer you will eventually look at the light you have and create a great photo.
